Mahogany veneer is very realistic with it being virtually indistinguishable with my solid mahogany floor above which it sits. The metal reinforced shelves supply the piece of mind that my many mathematics and computer hardcover books will not, overtime, bow the shelves under their weight.

Only problem, which is pretty par for the course these days, was with the very poorly translated assembly instructions. Why these manufacturers can't hire a single native English speaking tech writer to assist with the translation of manuals is beyond me. If any manufacturers are listening, I would be willing to offer my services as a skilled English speaking technician to clean up and clarify the instructions for a very reasonable price of a few hundred dollars per page. lol... but seriously too...

One tip: While the instructions do not clearly state which piece should be the top of the bookshelf and which piece should be used for the bottom, looking at the coving on the back side of the booksehlf (the indented square in whch the back panneling fits/drops into) to ensure the backing wall properly fits into the channeled out area will make it clear. If the two pieces are reversed, the backing will not neatly drop into the indentation. Assemble the bookshelf with the front of it laying on the floor with a comforter or other soft padding in between to prevent scratching of the front and all should be clear and simple even with the less than clear instructions.

Overall, a beautiful bookshelf that has the appearance of solid mahogany for a fraction of the cost (and weight!).

I purchased these bookcases because they are advertised as "heavy duty" and "commercial grade" shelf units that have "wood construction" and can hold up to 150 lbs./shelf. They appear to be attractive, simple, and study bookcases for a home library.

Unfortunately they are a disappointment. They are not really "wood construction"; they are particle board covered with a *very* thin veneer. They have peg and cam-lock hardware that strips easily during assembly if you are not careful. (I noticed while assembling 3 of these shelf units that the hardware in each package was from a different manufacturing run -- some of the cam-lock bolts were better made than others. That's *not* a good sign of quality manufacture.) The shelves are also particle board with thin veneer, and they have a single, very thin, and loosely secured metal rod in the middle for shelf strength support. The back is a fairly substantial sheet of plywood -- the only sturdy plywood in the whole unit.

These shelves assemble like press-wood furniture you would buy at WalMart. But the real problem is, with my books on the shelves they sag and bend quite substantially. I have perhaps 50 lbs. of books on a given shelf, or less. No matter, the shelves are bowed. (The first thing my son said when he saw them was, "Wow, those shelves are sagging!") Needless to say, the metal "reinforcement" under the shelves doesn't do much. Maybe they won't break, but they look cheap. Sagging shelves and loose particle board joints are not what you want for a home library.

If you have a lot of books and you want affordable shelving that will *really* support them, I advise looking elsewhere. These shelves may be good enough for medium duty loads, but they are not, in my opinion, truly "heavy duty" at all. I am rather disappointed.

Comments about All Other Brands Laguna Heavy Duty Bookcases:

Purchased two 30" units. Assembly per directions works well. Pieces are clearly marked. Can be assembled by one person though on occasion two persons is helpful. Directions call for using small hammer to drive in the dowels, but tolerances on my units were loose and did not require a hammer. Suggest a touch of Elmers glue to hold the dowels in if tolerances are loose. Units look good, finish is consistent, and metal stiffener on middle shelf appears to work to eliminate sagging. Good value for price paid.

Comments about All Other Brands Laguna Heavy Duty Bookcases:

I had bought other shelves, but the consistency of the finish was very poor. They were the same finish but side by side were not even close in color. The Lagunas look like they came from the same lot, even though they were shipped 2 weeks apart.

Be careful inserting shelves. There is a metal support bar that runs down the middle. If this is not flush with the edge of the shelf, you will scratch the side of the case.
