The varnishing is minimal -- the bottoms of shelves have none, and the rest of the piece is covered very thinly. The footprint, both the whole case, and the individual legs, is rather small. Partly, this is design, but the legs could be a bit wider at the bottom, so that the shelf is a bit sturdier on a rug.

    Do like the solid wood. [...].Pieces did not line up well for assembly. We need to use own hardware to complete the assembly. Caps to cover screw covers do not stay in place, glue needed to keep them where they belong. Also, Wood finsh on the shelves were hit or miss. Some shelves look great, others had a large off color putty mark not cleaned up at all.

      I would absolutely order another one of these bookshelves if needed and certainly recommend it. It looks great, is wood rather than pressed board, went together fairly easily - I had one back piece that was slightly misaligned, but I was able to switch them around and they fit. I am very pleased with this purchase and the price was great.

        I was so impressed with the first one I purchased, that I had to get 2 more! I love the fact that they are solid wood, and not article board. The shelves can take being loaded with books without bowing under the weight. The lacquer is a little thin in a couple of corners, but that doesn't damage or hinder the beautiful appearance of the shelf itself.
